Town where you live Washougal, Washington
Experience (300 characters max) 6 years as Washougal Councilmember, Mayor Pro Tem 2010
For 17 years, I have worked within the Washougal community to make Washougal a better place. I served on Washougal City Council for 6 years, was Mayor ProTem during a tempestuous time in our history, worked hard on every Washougal School District levy and bond to ensure passage since 2005, was President of the Camas-Washougal Rotary Club, and have volunteered for many local nonprofit organizations in the community. Washougal is in a time of transition, and I have the experience to lead the city
1.Rapid Growth – We are in a period of rapid residential growth; this could jeopardize the wonderful small town feel unless we have great design standards in place for residential and commercial development. 2.Long Range planning – long range financial plan to be able to add resources (staff) in public works, police, and emergency services to accommodate this growth 3.Quality of life issues – More sidewalks, parks and trails, open spaces, and play spaces for kids. This has been a priority
Rapid growth provides the greatest opportunity in terms of one-time revenues, but also the greatest challenges.
We have a city community center that hosts many senior activities such as meals, exercise classes, parties, has a good supply of surplus baked goods. I will continue to fund these activities.

In addition, Meals on Wheels uses our Washougal Community Center kitchen to provide meals to homebound seniors.

I support continuing a free meal program, Refuel Friday, which provides hot meals with no questions asked.
The City of Washougal already has a mandate that contractors must comply with E-Verify, in order to ensure that their workers are legally employed. I support this mandate.

I don’t believe the city of Washougal should be involved in any program that specifically targets immigrants, legal or illegal. This is a function of the Federal government.
As the city grows, we face the daunting challenge of building new streets and roads, as well as maintaining our current street network. We must work to find a solution to alleviate traffic that backs up onto State Highway 14 for several hours each day because of an at-grade BNSF railroad crossing that run 40+ trains/day.

As well, we face pressure from increasingly strict EPA rules that affect costs to users for water, storm water and sewer utilities, and these costs are already high.
Homelessness is a community problem. We need to build a community network of service organizations, non-profits and faith based organizations to develop a strategy to alleviate homelessness.
