Mantua Township Trustee {_getChooseLabel(this.selections.length)}

Each township shall have three elected trustees, serving staggered terms of four years as the law-enacting body for all township business.The trustees can establish policies for the township area, consider zoning and prepare a budget for the year. If needed, the trustees can consider appointing a township administrator with approval of voters. The trustees oversee police and fire operations and make day-to-day decisions in the township’s best interests.

What are your thoughts regarding funding the infrastructure needs of your community?

Our township receives both inside and outside millage as well as local govt funds each year to support our infrastructure, mainly our 37 center-lane miles of roadway. Each year we work within our budget and stretch it to repair, resurface, reseal, and patch as many miles as our funds will allow. The local gov't funds continue to decrease each year but we remain vigilant and spend the dollars we get wisely. While increased funding would allow us to improve more mileage each year we currently do a tremendous job of working within our means and our budget. Mantua Township is currently working together with fellow townships and other communities to restructure local gov't funding, our hope is this will be beneficial for our township to increase the revenue received through this funding vehicle. However, the bottom line is the more dollars we can get to improve our roadways and stretch our budget the happier our residents and visitors to our township will be.

Training & Experience 1998 to present - Mantua Township Trustee, LEPC Member-Appointed by County Commissioners, Mantua-Shalersville Fire Board Representative & Alternate, 36 years experience operating a small business, working with heavy equipment and with contractors & local businesses.
Given the continued reductions in State Local Government funding, creative management of the township budget is more critical than ever. My goal has always been to save wherever possible by negotiating with businesses & contractors on purchases and services. Utilizing our resources including our own labor force, sourcing out when it is more economical and actively seeking grants and other funding sources. To live within our means, budget responsibly and NOT have to go back to our residents for additional taxes for support of our roads and infrastructure!

I have attended the Ohio Township conferences in Columbus annually to expand my knowledge of new techniques and more efficient ways to maintain and improve our roadways as well as establish important contacts beneficial to the future of Mantua Township.

Training & Experience The duties and responsibilities of my profession revolve around three things: Problem Solving, Mediation, and Resolution. I believe these three characteristics are essential to have when working with and for the residents of Mantua Township.
Infrastructure at it's core speaks to our township owned buildings, roads, and cemeteries. How do we balance the upkeep of those items while being fiscally responsible when it comes to our budget? I believe there is a two prong approach here. First we have to review our spending as a township to ensure that we are properly allocating the appropriate funds needed to not only maintain our buildings, roads, and cemeteries but also improve and upgrade these items before they go into disrepair. Secondly, we have to utilize grants that are available to assist in the remodeling or upgrading of our township owned buildings and equipment. Implementing a comprehensive maintenance program designed to monitor and grade our buildings, roads and equipment should be at the forefront. Moving forward funding will continue to go down, we need to act now, we need to get ahead of the game, and we need to think outside the box in order stay fiscally sustainable.
