Provide a brief paragraph describing your qualifications for this office.
I attended Fisk University where I received my Bachelor of Arts (cum laude). in 1974. Graduated 6/124 from Howard School of Law in 1977.
I then served as an Assistant District Attorney under Denis Dillon prosecuting felony cases. I entered private practice where I handled criminal litigation; labor and NFL player contract negotiations.
I was appointed to the Hempstead Village Court(1989) where I presided over local code violations; vehicle and traffic offenses and B misdemeanor crimes. I was appointed to the District Court in 1996 served for less than one year as I lost the election. Ran in 1997 won election to the County Court and re election in 2007. I have handled many high profile trials over the years. I have always been found well qualified by the Nassau County Bar Association on the three occasions I have run for judicial office.
I also have served as an adjunct professor teaching advanced trial practice and legal ethics at Touro and Hofstra Schools of Law.
I have served with distinction as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of New York from 1990-2004. I served as the lead prosecutor in several noteworthy cases, including Michael Swango, a doctor convicted of killing numerous patients around the world, including several patients at the Northport Veterans Administration Hospital; John Spano in his failed attempt to purchase the New York Islanders Hockey Team and the political corruption prosecution of former Chief Deputy Nassau County Executive, Robert McDonald for his role in a scheme to defraud the County of more than $70 million through a failed self-insurance plan. Since October 2004, I have been the managing partner of LaRusso, Conway & Bartling LLP in Mineola, New York in which time I was retained by the Suffolk County Legislative as an independent ethics investigator.
Presently I am the Supervising Judge of the Nassau County Court, I have held this position for more than four years and served in the same capacity in the District Court. While in the District Court I spearheaded the formation of Specialty Courts to address the needs of Veterans, Adolescents, defendants suffering from mental illness and defendants caught up in Human Trafficking. As a Judge for more than 19 years and as the former Deputy Attorney General in Charge of the Criminal Division in NY State I am well versed in our Criminal Justice System and bring a wealth of experience to my position. My past and present service in community based organizations (Library Board, Hospital Board, PAL, Lions, CYO, Lacrosse Foundation) provide me with a unique perspective in handling cases and insuring that the needs of the public, including crime victims, are appropriately addressed in all cases within the Nassau County Court. Lifelong resident of Nassau County. Married. Five children.
I have thirty years experience in the Nassau County Court system. I was a Nassau County Assistant District Attorney for 11 years specializing in narcotics and street gang investigations. I served for years as a Nassau County Court Judge ( 2005-2015) presiding over the most serious felony cases in the county. I had the reputation of being a fair, independent and hard working jurist. I have been honored by the Nassau County Criminal Courts Bar Association, the Nassau County Court Officers Association and the Fraternal Order of Court Officers. I am the the only woman of the four candidates running for Nassau County Court Judge this year. Graduate of Hofstra Law School, State University of New York at Albany and Syosset High School. Proud mom of two daughters, one who just started her career as an attorney and the other is a college
student. I am looking forward to returning to the bench to serve the people of Nassau County!
