Campaign Message I will provide good, honest representation to the city of Fenton's residents. I promise to work hard as their council representative. I will always do my best to do the right thing.
The only issue that currently gives me any concern for the city at this time is the condition of the streets in some parts of the city. The city is trying to change the City Charter so that longer-term bonds can be issued. This is one of the ways I believe we could upgrade our infrastructure. I believe in doing the job correctly. By this I mean we should upgrade our water lines, sanitary sewer and storm sewer so that we don't have to dig up freshly paved streets because a water main broke. I have mentioned bonds as a way to pay for this as it won't be cheap. If some constituents disagree with this method of paying to fix the roads, I am open-minded and more than willing to listen to any good ideas that are presented to me
I will always do my best to do the right thing for the citizens of the city of Fenton.

I am a lifelong resident of the Fenton area. I am already currently serving on the city of Fenton Board of Review, the Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Library Board. I have been running a Real Estate / Insurance Loss appraising business that my father began in 1955.

Experience I am currently on The Fenton City Council. I was appointed to The Fenton City Council in June of 2013 and then elected to serve that November. Before that I served two terms (6 years) on the Planning Commission and as Planning Commission chair I also served on the DDA projects committee. I also served 3 terms (9 years) on the Zoning Board of Appeals where I served as chair.
Community Involvement I am currently the chairman of Fenton Area Resources and Referral Network Inc. (aka FARR) Past event committees include Fenton Jubil-Eve and Fenton’s 175th Anniversary. Current event committees include The Fenton Freedom Festival, The Fenton Community Expo, Taste In Fenton, Artwalk, and Jinglefest. In 2010 the Fenton Regional Chamber of Commerce presented me with their Community Service Award.
Endorsements In 2013 I was endorsed by The Fenton Regional Chamber of Commerce and I hope to gain their endorsement again this year.
Campaign Message I will continue to make decisions based on the best interests of the community through research and an open dialogue with the residents.
Roads, Legacy costs for retirees, and responsible development. I plan to work hard to support a road millage for the City. With the loss of revenue sharing from the State I believe that a road millage is the only answer for roads. I don’t want to stop providing health care for our retirees. They worked hard and deserve to keep this benefit, but with rising health care cost we need to explore every option in coverage as well as different plans for new employees. As City Council Representative on the Planning Commission I plan to keep working toward responsible development and updates to our Master Plan. The Master Plan gives us a road map to plan our development with input from the community.
I believe in having a healthy dialog with residents as well as doing whatever research is necessary. This along with listening to and questioning the consultants and planners helps me to form my opinion.
I will continue to make myself available to everyone to discuss their concerns. I will also work to make sure that the meeting agendas and minutes will always be available for anyone to view on-line.
I have spent three terms on the Zoning Board of Appeals, Two terms on the Planning Commission, and four years on The Fenton City Council. Those years have given me a good understanding of all of the City's issues. I have served as chairman for the ZBA and Planning Commission as well as The Genesee County Small Cities and Villages Assoc. That experience has shown my leadership qualities. My background at work was to analyze, isolate and repair trouble, I believe those qualities are an asset while making my decisions..

Currently a youth baseball coach for 11 year old and 14 year old boys. Campaign Message Fenton's Future Starts Today
The biggest issue we face is roads that are in steady decline. The cost of fixing our roads is bigger than we can cut from other areas in the budget. We need to put a fiscally reasonable plan in place that allows us to fix the current problems and prevents us from being right back where we are today a decade from now.

A second issue is infrastructure (water & sewer systems). Older neighborhoods are in bad shape. We can address this at the same time as roads, making updates while roads are being redone, and save residents a massive amount of money.

The big issue we face as a community is increased youth drug use. This is a problem we have to address as a community. I’d like to work with the schools and city to put a parent education program in place that can slow down this epidemic.
For every decision, we must consider: (1) impact on residents, (2) cost to the city, and (3) timeline to complete the project

If a decision will impact our residents, we have a duty to get public input before voting. We represent our community, not our own personal interest, and this helps ensure we make well-informed decisions.

Cost and project timeline are very closely aligned. The easiest ways to drive up costs on a project is delays. We need more diligence to ensure all city projects come in on-time and under budget. We can’t allow contractors to come back for more money, driving up the cost. Additionally, we need to stay vigilant that we only spend what's in our budget.
Monthly work sessions to review pending big issues help give residents an opportunity to have their opinion heard, in a public forum. These sessions also give us the opportunity to discuss future issues that could impact our community (roads, legalized marijuana, state law changes, etc.) but aren’t being voted on at this time. Every meeting is open to the public, and we work to ensure any resident that will be impacted by the outcome of these discussions is present to provide input.

These meetings (and all Council Meetings) are public, but very few attend. We need new (and better) ways to communicate upcoming issues and get resident feedback. Better communication with our community through different channels can help improve community engagement.
An effective City Council represents a cross-section of the community it serves. Elected officials should bring varied backgrounds – public service, private industry, and community organizations. I have all three.

I'm a City Councilman serving on multiple boards and commissions (see above). I have 20+ years business experience including building multi-million dollar businesses, rebuilding programs, managing global teams, and leading launch of global projects. I'm also involved with non-profits and charitable foundations in leadership and board roles. I serve on the Fenton Education Foundation and Fenton Tigers Travel Baseball boards.  I also run the largest festival in Genesee County, St. John Applefest in Fenton (4 days, 500 volunteers, 30,000 visitors).

Development - I would work to ensure that the city focuses on smart growth - balancing the community experience while embracing the positives that can come from added investment, increased amenities and additional living and employment opportunities. Investors should be investing in the city, not just a building. Parking - As the city grows, the additional people living in, as well as visiting the downtown puts a strain on the availability of parking. I would like to see investment into the pedestrian experience, making it enjoyable to park at underutilized locations and walk. Changing world - I would like to be ahead of issues such as driverless technologies, increasing opportunities for seniors in our aging society, as well as the amenities needed to attract the younger generation.
Plan big, think small - Decisions made by the city council must fall under a framework of a master plan. However, the decision making process needs to start with the small details. I would like to approach the issue based on how it affects one person, then one home or business, then one neighborhood, then one area, then the city, etc. By starting small and listening to all parties, each individual is afforded a fair opportunity and not dismissed offhand under the guise of the greater good.
Open dialogue during meetings is the easiest way to ensure transparency. It is important that a council member ask questions if they have questions, admit when they are unsure about an issue, and allow others to see how they worked through the process to make a decision. That open dialogue allows the city to see how and why a decision was made - through gathering of facts, listening to opinions and concerns, etc. and not backroom deals and political back scratching.
I understand the city itself, as my grandparents raised their family a few blocks from where we are raising ours. I understand the workings of the city as a member of 2 city boards, and having attending all city council meetings since May. I understand the experience and challenges faced by a volunteer led program in the city, being/having been a volunteer coach (in three sports), cub scout den master, volunteer for the American Red Cross, volunteer for the Domestic Violence Project SAFEhouse, etc. I understand the experience and challenges faced by small businesses, being an executive level employee of a small business and wearing all of the hats that entails.
