Experience Schenectady County District Attorney since January 1990. He began his legal career as a law clerk with the Legal Aid Society of Schenectady County. He served as assistant corporation counsel for the city of Schenectady; as an assistant district attorney and deputy chief assistant district attorney in Schenectady County; and associate then partner at the Schenectady law firm of Higgins, Roberts, Beyerl & Coan, all prior to his election as District Attorney.
Gang & gun violence, domestic violence and property crimes are major concerns. To target gun crimes, we use a strategy emphasizing moral engagement with people who are most at risk for gang/gun violence. It connects those who wish to change their behavior to services and programs while ensuring tough enforcement against those who continue to engage in violent behavior. We will partner with the new Sheriff's Task Force and use a network of public surveillance cameras established by my office to interdict gun, drug and other crimes occurring in public. This strategy uses technology to identify & target people engaging in criminal behavior while minimizing police interactions with law-abiding citizens. It will preserve evidence, enhance crime-solving and eliminate people from suspicion. We will continue to protect vulnerable victims through our Child Advocacy Center and our partnership with YWCA, which serves domestic violence victims.
I never lose sight of the trust voters have placed in me, the duty to treat all people fairly, uphold the highest ethical standards required of prosecutors; protect the community from violent predators and when appropriate, offer individuals who have been charged with a crime the help or sentence that provides a chance to change their lives. These facets of the job are equally rewarding; it is a privilege to serve. I am one of the most experienced elected prosecutors in the state & actively participate in the state DAs' Association, where my colleagues & I support policies, practices and legislation that promote fair and ethical prosecution. As a manager, my strength lies in identifying talented people and providing them an environment that allows them to take responsibility commensurate with their abilities without micromanagement. This work climate that has resulted in experienced lawyers committed to public service and a more effective criminal justice system in the county.
