I am running for Mayor. In the 16 years I have been on City Council, we have done great things in Solon with our schools, city services, safety forces, infrastructure and economic development but while Solon has much to celebrate and be proud of, we cannot rest in our laurels. We can always be better. I have both the vision and the experience to keep Solon on top.
My priorities would be re-development of aging shopping centers, retain and grow our business community, change the current culture to a more business-friendly environment for both small and large businesses, and existing and new businesses, have a hands-on relationship with existing and incoming businesses, maintain a strong infrastructure system, enhance training for all of our safety forces, increase programming for senior citizens and explore possibilities for additional empty-nester/senior housing, re-create citizen boards, particularly a business advisory council, as well as art, culture and recreation, create opportunities to celebrate our growing diversity, improve traffic flow through the main corridors, and upgrade Liberty and Aurora Roads.
The empty and aging retail areas of our city have needed re-development for many years. It has been a challenge to accomplish due to a multitude of factors. Another issue is the perceived difficulty and reputation that it is difficult to do business in Solon. As I have stated during my campaign, making Solon more business friendly and re-developing the vacant and outdated retail areas of our city, will be two of my top priorities.

My City Council experience has given me the opportunity to know our residents and to hear their concerns. I often hear an underlying malaise - we are doing well financially, but there is no forward motion, development, and improvement.

This angst is associated with our inability to keep quality restaurants and the confusing way with which we have lost Liberty Ford. I hear that we don’t have the charm of other nearby cities and that we are slowly losing out to other places that people like to visit.

The key question is about the leadership Solon requires. We need a vision, and a leader that can develop collaboration between city council, the staff, the business owners, the workers and residents so that we are all working on that shared vision. The mayor must be actively in the community, visible and encouraging everyone to join in the effort to better the city. The mayor cannot wait for things to happen but must take the initiative and get things done. The mayor must also be the leading salesman for the city in pursuing new business owners, business expansion, and new concepts for retail and development.

It is humbling to hear how many residents are urging me to use my background and experience in molding, leading and implementing change with a sense of urgency to help Solon become a dynamic, 21st Century city. This is why I am running for mayor. I know how to lead, develop collaboration, and to make things happen. It is a labor of love.
Engage our community in the process of redeveloping our retail infrastructure. I have been meeting with business people and developers, and have begun the formation of a vision to make Solon both distinctive and interesting. We can have a unique presence without the standard development approaches which will generate that missing sense of a downtown center.

Expand out business base through cooperation with the business community as well as the chamber of commerce. We will develop strategies to attract new businesses, help our current ones grow and create opportunities for startups to be based in Solon. We also need to form a mayor's roundtable to increase our dialogue with our business owners, allowing them to be heard and to help us understand what help they need from the city.

In order for us to increase our sense of community our residents need to be more engaged with the city. We will institute some additional boards and committees to provide opportunities for involvement and to develop a sense of ownership and excitement. This will also help us accomplish things that would not otherwise be possible, and will give all of our residents a belief that our city is becoming more dynamic.
A sense of malaise, a feeling that things aren't improving. We are being challenged by our neighboring communities as being better places to establish businesses, and having a greater sense of community.
